Q: Looking down the road, if and when the pump fails / wears out, would I be able to replace it or do I need to replace the entire unit? Hence, would I be able to use the power inverter or controller with other pumps? Thanks.
by Larry from Illinois on January 22, 2014

A: These battery backup systems, like any other system are designed to work with their specific components only. If any one of them should fail, you could contact the MANUFACTURER and they would assist you in replacing the specific component.

Q: I am interested in the 2 battery system back up sump pump. Can I install this myself.+ I am fairly profecient .
by JIm Dreyer from New Jersey on June 23, 2012

A: If you are somewhat familiar with plumbing and working with PVC, primer and cement, you shouldn't have much of a problem. The pdf of the owners manual is available for download on the PRODUCT PAGE to give you a look at the installation process. It can be found on the right side of the page under the "Specs" tab.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Will the watchdog big dog bwd12120c pump out water at 20ft.
by Jim W. from Minnesota on March 24, 2012

A: The max vertical height the Big Dog can pump out is around 13-15. Anything over 13', it will not be able to pump reliably. It can also usually do around 25 sideways provided the horizontal run does not slant upwards at all.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can this Big Dog System be run using 2 batteries in series for longer run time?
by Howard Mark from Pennsylvania on May 20, 2011

A: Yes, the Big Dog is the only Basement Watchdog backup system that will allow 2 batteries to be connected in PARALLEL to provide a longer run time.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I currently have the small emergency backup sump pump (watchdog), which no longer works. I am looking to replace it with watchdog big dog backup system. Would the discharge pipe have to be modified to accommodate the new pump? Also, I just replaced the (6 hour)battery last year and it seems fine. Would it be possible to use this battery with the more powerful pump?
by Bill from Ohio on March 05, 2011

A: All of the Basement Watchdog Backup Pumps we carry accept a 1 1/2" discharge pipe, incuding the Big Dog. The battery required for the Big Dog is the 30HDC140S
will run the Big Dog system for up to 7 1/2 hours.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I have pumps and only want the battery backup electronic system. can i buy just the battery backup without the pump?
by Bob Braga from Massachusetts on February 12, 2011

A: We only sell the complete systems. You might try contacting the manufacturer @ (800) 991-0466 for more information about individual parts.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need to leave my battery backup system charging at all times?
by Patrick Mcclone from Wisconsin on January 03, 2011

A: To be completely sure your backup system is fully functional during a power outage or weather event, these systems need to stay plugged in at all times.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: how many hours backup does this provide in case the power goes out. we are looking for a 24 hour back up pump.
by Diana from New Jersey on January 03, 2011

A: This system does not include a battery, and that is what determines the hours of backup a system can provide. There is also the factor of how often a system is running that determines the amount of backup time.

Will Buy Another
We've lived in our house since 1995 and bought this bad boy in 2006 after our basement flooded due to a sump pump too small. The backup pump served us until 2010 when the battery finally kicked as did the electronic unit. I tried replacing the battery with a marine battery but the unit fried a battery that wasn't from the mfr.

We let it sit for a year without replacing and we had our second basement flood. Twice in 20+ years and both times is when we didn't have the backup. Stood the test... more

Just Had Flooded My Whole Basement
The activation switch is absolutely unreliable. The rising water level mostly doesn't activate the switch. One must violently jerk the floats in order to activate pumping. You just cost me around $5000 and one horrible evening. Thank you very much!
Cons: Unreliable

Worth The Price
For years I have used a Bilge Pump from a boat to serve as a sump crock back up. It has been a reliable performer. It used a
separate 3/4" line for discharge. Because of the twelve foot head and restricted diameter, it did not have an adequate volume.

The Big Dog back up put it to shame. The Big Dog has put my concerns about volume and run time to rest.
Bottom Line- Installation was a breeze. Works better than expected. Would recommend to everyone. Very Pleased.

Great Quality
Quality- great.

Two small suggestions:

Provide a way to disconnect the float switch wire from the control box - it would make installation easier if you could work on the installation without the control box in the way.

Allow for a way to use a sealed marine style battery so that the low battery water light is not on all the time.

It has great directions, well made and while it tests out as advertised, I hope we never have to test it under a heavy load.

Harold,
The system is set up to work with the Basement Watchdog battery (Model 30HDC140S); if you use their battery the fluid light will operate properly.

Indirect Sandy Power Outage
I just got this system installed a week ago Monday, October 29, 2012 (actually 2:15 AM October 30) I just completed the install and got it plugged in no more than 10 seconds before the power went out. It immediately went to battery operation and worked fine.

I was surprised that it worked showing the battery as fully charged, as I had just put the acid in the battery about 15 minutes before completing the hook up. I purchased the acid from a big box store which was the least expensive... more

Stood Up To Hurricane Sandy
I have a summer home at the NJ shore outside of Atlantic City. It is a 95 year old perfectly restored property that is 1 1/2 blocks from the beach. Last year I decided to install 3 of the Basement Watchdog Big Combo units to replace three standard pumps in my 1500 sq. ft. basement.

We have just experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy while physically being in Florida for the season. We lost power in the first day of the storm, most likely sometime Monday; and just had the power... more

Wet Basement? Sump Pumps Direct Is The Way To Go!
The area that I live in has a lot of underground water. When we get heavy rains, the water comes up from underneath and my 2 sump pumps work overtime keeping up. I don't have much of a problem unless we lose electricity, then I have a major problem.

I have a back-up in the form of a portable generator, but if I am not home that does no good. I did have a small battery back-up system that was of lower quality and capacity.

Thanks to Sump Pumps Direct I have a good system in the... more

Why It Is Called The Big Dog
The "Emergency" and "Special" models contain some great features. But, the "Big Dog" takes the concept to a whole new level.

It features an extremely powerful 20-amp battery charger that can recharge while it's pumping. Plus, you can connect a second battery to the "Big Dog" to double its run time.

Best of all, it turns on weekly, actively looking for vulnerabilities. For example, the "Big Dog" can actually sense if the backup sump pump... more

Only House On The Block Not Flooded
I am happy to say I installed this backup system just in time, before we were hit with the worst hurricane storm in years.

We lost power on and off for 4 days and while all the houses around me had 1-2 feet of water in their basements I had only to wipe up a puddle from a leaky basement window.

This system saved my furnished basement from ruin...It doesn't get better than that.
