Q: If the backup pump is activated due to heavy water flow (to help the main pump) and the AC power stays on, will the system keep charging the battery to allow the backup pump to keep running indefinitely? by Scott Mueller from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: Yes, the controller will keep the battery charging and the pump running indefinitely if needed. This is true for the Basement Watchdog model BWE and the BWSP stand alone battery backup systems as well. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the installation complicated. by Valerie from New Jersey on August 25, 2011
A: If you are at all handy around the house and are somewhat familiar with plumbing and PVC, it's not all that difficult. The OWNERS MANUAL is available to download by clicking on the "SPECS" tab and looking on the right side of the page in the "Download Documents" section. There you will find all the installation instructions to give you an idea of what's needed to perform the complete installation. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Where can I buy the battery and how much it cost? by Clara from Massachusetts on March 05, 2011
A: The Model 30HDC140S is available for $139.99 (without acid) and will run this pump for approximately 12 hours. The battery is also sold with the acid for $249.99. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need to leave my battery backup system charging at all times? by Patrick Mcclone from Wisconsin on January 03, 2011
A: To be completely sure your backup system is fully functional during a power outage or weather event, these systems need to stay plugged in at all times.

Q: If I buy a Basement Watchdog pump do I need a Basement Watchdog battery? by Karen from Illinois on January 03, 2011
A: You can use any deep cycle marine battery, as long as it is not maintenance-free. However, there are several advantages to using a Basement Watchdog battery. The Watchdog battery accommodates the system’s fluid sensor which will sound an alarm when the battery needs water…a very important feature, since a dry battery will not perform. In addition, Basement Watchdog batteries run longer per charge, and last years longer. A typical marine battery will last 2-4 years, while the Watchdog battery will last approximately 5-7 years. Basement Watchdog batteries are shipped dry (without acid) so they stay fresh on the shelf indefinitely, while wet batteries have a short shelf life.

Q: how many hours backup does this provide in case the power goes out. we are looking for a 24 hour back up pump. by Diana from New Jersey on January 03, 2011
A: This system does not include a battery, and that is what determines the hours of backup a system can provide. There is also the factor of how often a system is running that determines the amount of backup time.

I Got This As A Backup For My Basement!
It works great. I put in my drain pit about 1 foot above the normal sump pump. I tested it out i could not asked for a better back up pump. The sensor box works great. I did a couple of tests on it. It is a great buy for the price and free shipping. Aa least $50.00 cheaper on this site compared to others.

Battery
This is my 2nd battery in 8 years, thought it was time to change it. My last battery was still running after 8 years, but knew that you should replace every 5. Good system and a great battery

Not Worth The Money
I purchased this item about 6 mos ago, installed it and tested it with a garden hose. It worked fine. However when the rain came and I unpluged the main pump to test it again, the Basement Watchdog could not keep up with the inflow of water causing it to run continuously while losing ground and draining the battery. It is suppose to be rated @ 1000 gal per hour @ 10ft, but i seriously doubt that number. If you want to buy this brand, don"t go with this model.

Inaccessible fuse
My Watchdog BWE pump worked well for several years as backup but it apparently froze up and as I finally discovered it blew a fuse link inside the controller box which is difficult to access. After freeing the pump, I wired and external fuse by soldering leads to circuit board and leading wires outside box where attached an easily accessible fuse. Seems like if you're going to fuse something, you should make the fuse reasonably accessible. Otherwise, it has worked OK. And of course the manual does not mention that the control box has an internal fuse which can blow if the pump impeller should become blocked or freezes up. The silence switch is convenient addition on the newer model.

Pleased
I was pleased with the purchase and the fast shipping. Only one concern I had was the float switch went bad after a week.

Piece Of Mind
Easy to install and have not had to us it, as it is a backup for the org. Hope I don't need to use it but it gives me peace of mind knowing it is there.

Great Backup System
As things happen in real life,I haven't had a power outage during a rain storm since purchasing and installing my BWE system. However it works great in a simulated emergency,i.e.,unplugging main pump and charger and using a garden hose. Installation was simple. My water heater and I now feel safe.
P.S.:I purchased a national brand six-pack type deep cycle marine battery instead of the acid filled.

Failed
My pump is just past 2 years old. It has only been activated 2 times for a few hours each.
Upon testing, I found the back-up to be not functioning. They tout all the alarms they have to alert you to a power or battery failure but there is no alarm when the pump itself simply stops working.
If I hadn't gone down to test it I would be without back up (actually, at the moment I am without back-up) and not have known it.
The only reason it got a star from me is because the system is a good idea with a useful alarm interface but when you get down to it, it's just a piece of crap.
SPD RESPONDS: We suggest you call Basement Watchdog tech support at (800) 991-0466; they are willing to talk to you even if your unit is out of warranty.

Nice Little Backup
This little guy is capable of saving the world -- okay, just your basement.
The Basement Watchdog Emergency Backup Sump Pump system is a great addition to your sump pit. It stands ready to handle any emergency, ranging from a power outage to a malfunctioned primary pump to excess water flow.
If your sump pit ordinarily isn't overwhelmed during a rain storm, this emergency pump will seve you fine.
However, if your primary pump struggles during a simple rain storm, we recommend getting something more powerful, like the Basement Watchdog Special System. It features a more powerful pump to help you through the storm.
Remember, the system includes all of the mechanical devices. The battery and battery acid is sold separately.
