Q: Do I need to install a check valve in addition to the Basement watchdog SPD-BW4000 kit? by Tom from Illinois on April 11, 2012
A: NO, this system already has a check valve built in for each pump. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the PeakFlow 12v maintenance free deep cycle 120ah AGM battery compatible with the WatchDog BW4000 pump system and charger ? Will it last 7.5hrs in continuous mode like the battery sold with the kit? What is the shelf life if used 2x a year intermittently for 1hr. for by Walter from Michigan on March 12, 2012
A: Per the instructions for the Basement Watchdog battery backup systems, DO NOT use a maintenance-free or a sealed battery. They are made of different materials and will trigger a false “Battery problem” alarm. A new Basement Watchdog 7.5 Hour Standby Battery, model 30HDC140S will run this system for a minimum of 7.5 hours continuously. However, most of the time the pump will turn on and off, and the battery will run the pump intermittently for days. In addition, the unique materials in the battery enable it to last for five to seven years in standby service. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If the backup pump is activated due to heavy water flow (to help the main pump) and the AC power stays on, will the system keep charging the battery to allow the backup pump to keep running indefinitely? by Scott Mueller from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: Yes, the controller will keep the battery charging and the pump running indefinitely if needed. This is true for the Basement Watchdog model BWE and the BWSP stand alone battery backup systems as well. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: my pit is 11"x11" square but 14" diagonal, will it work? installed diagonally by Bob Bramble from New Jersey on September 24, 2011
A: The Basement Watchdog combination system is compact and will fit in a sump pit as small as 12” wide and 14” high (the size of a 5 gallon bucket). It measures 18“ inches from the bottom of the pump to the top of the Yconnector where it will be attached to the discharge pipe. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hello Jim, If I purchase the Basement Watchdog BW4000-Kit can I add a second battery and wire them together? Would the charger supplied be sufficient? I'm looking for more backup time. Thank you by Craig Slater from New Jersey on August 28, 2011
A: The Basement Watchdog Big Dog is the only Basement Watchdog battery backup system capable of accepting a second battery wired in parallel. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What is a reasonable expectation for pump life and battery life? Our environment is occassional pump use during the year with considerable use for 2 to 3 days a couple of times per year during storm. by Bob Peters from Connecticut on August 28, 2011
A: Pump life expectancy should be a good 5-7 years and battery life is typically 2-3 years. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If & when the primary pump fails (hopefully in many years) can the backup pump continue to be used with a 'new' primary or are they connected in some fashion? Also, does this include the battery box? Do the primary & backup have separate plugs, I want to connect them to separate circuits in my basement. Thanks!! by Dave Jarvas from Illinois on July 26, 2011
A: If & when the pump should fail, you can replace the primary with a Basement Watchdog model BW1050 primary pump with no problem whatsoever. The backup pump is another matter. If any backup component should fail, you would need to contact Basement Watchdog for replacement as we only offer the complete kit. The battery, acid and battery box are included with this kit and each pump does have a seperate cord and plug, so you would be able to connect them to seperate circuits, which is always an excellent idea and recommended. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: You say that the battery is a 735 hour battery. Does that mean it will run for 735 hours? That seems like a really long time...something I'd be excited about....but a really long time. Can you clarify? by Steve Brandenburg from Ohio on July 24, 2011
A: The battery is a 7 1/2 (7.5) hour battery meaning it will run the backup pump for approximately 7.5 hours continuously or approximately 18-24 hours non-continuously on a full charge. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: what is the gph on the battery backup pump? by Russ from Connecticut on May 25, 2011
A: The battery backup on this system will pump 1730 GPH at 10 feet. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Will this work for sewage? I need a back-up solution for a sewage pump. by Joe from Illinois on May 04, 2011
A: No, definitely not. We currently do not offer any backup systems for sewage applications. You might try contacting Zoeller tech support at 800-928-7867, Simer tech support at (800) 468-7867 or Wayne tech support at 800-237-0987 for more assistance. Your other option might be to install a standby GENERATOR that would automatically turn on and provide power for your pumps and other major appliances when you lose power from your utility for any reason. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim, How long is the battery good for? Hoping 7.5 hours. Can the Big Dog watch monitoring system be added to this? if so how much extra? by Shawn from Pennsylvania on April 09, 2011
A: the battery is a 735 hour rated battery, however keep in mind that the older the battery gets ans the more it cycles, the more the battery life is reduced as with any battery. In order to achieve the benefits of the Big Dog monitoring system, you would need to purchase the Big Dog System. the components are not interchangeable. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: want to buy bw4000 kit but my sump pump does not have a veticle float now. The float floats up to almost the top before turning on the sumppump, and the pump is always in water. what do I need. by Todd Nelson from Wisconsin on February 27, 2011
A: The BW4000Kit is a combo system that replaces your primary pump and includes a backup pump, plus the float switches are included. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: How small of a footprint does this unit take? My sump hole is square shaped and 11in by 11in. by Mike from Connecticut on February 01, 2011
A: This Basement Watchdog combination system is compact and will fit in a sump pit as small as 12” wide and 14” high (the size of a 5 gallon bucket).
It measures 18“ inches from the bottom of the pump to the top of the "Y"connector where it will be attached to the discharge pipe. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need a check valve with this unit? by Elliot from New Jersey on January 27, 2011
A: These combination pump systems from Basement Watchdog have built-in check valves. An additional float switch is not needed. by Jim, Product Expert
This is one of our best selling items for a reason...it is a reliable, powerful, and because of it's affordable price, this combination kit from industry leader Basement Watchdog takes our "Good" recommendation.
The combo runs a 1/2HP motor that can pump up to 2800GPH and also has a battery back-up if the electricity is cut or there is excessive water that the pump can't handle. There is an alarm if the pump fails or maintenance is required.
Another security feature is that both pumps have two redundant floats. If one fails the other takes over. This unit is best for residential use.
With the reputation of Basement Watchdog behind this sump pump combo, and the built-in security features, you can rest easy when it rains.

Basement Watchdog combo - Good So Far, Easy Install
So I installed my new sump pump in a matter of minutes really. The most time was taken routing and gluing the pvc and filling the battery. I was able to move the floats on the pump up high enough so that it doesn't cycle as much as others have mentioned. I actually removed the float from its current location and moved it above the Y where the backup pump pipe comes in.
The electrical connections were simple and easy. having it as one unit made the PVC pipe connection very easy as well. I don't have a good place for a shelf so right now the battery is in a box on the floor. One note here, there is no strap to secure the battery box, that would be a nice included item. And be careful, the battery is VERY heavy.
The battery fluid install was the worst part. Make sure you do this outside, away from your house, and wear goggles and gloves. the fill tube tends to leak and splash a bit. i was able to use the cardboard battery box to lift the fluid container up high enough for fast flow which helped. But plan on having a bit of cleanup - Wiping down the battery and stuff.
All and all a nice unit with easy install. It hasn't run on its own yet so i held back a star, but in my tests it operated well, maybe just some adjustments to the floats is all i need now.

Watchdog Installed Without A Hitch
I just installed my new sump pump this Sunday! I am a 49 year old woman who did this without any help. Your instructions were very complete and precise. I did not have a problem doing this job. Now, to see how it works. It has pumped twice and so far so good. Great product, great directions...

At this time all is working fine and it is a great set up as to an all in one thing. Easy to install and the cost is fair. The only thing I would suggest is to somehow make the filling of the battery with the acid a bit easier, lost a pair of pants due to the filler hose flipping acid back on me.

Super Easy To Install and Great Piece Of Mind!!
After my basement flooded during Tropical Storm Lee, I decided enough was enough. My Basement Watchdog kit was a breeze to install and runs super quiet. So far so good...I will update in a few months.

Easy Install With Everything you need
Bought this unit after loosing power during Hurricane Irene and coming within an inch of my basement flooding. This unit is very easy to install. The hardest part for me was getting all of the spiders out of my pit before I started the install. The instructions are easy to follow.
Filling the battery was a lot easier than I expected and I would just recommend eye protection and gloves in case there are any spills. While still waiting for the first big storm to fully test this unit, when putting a hose into the pit the unit had to problem keeping up both when under normal power and when on battery backup.
Both the primary and backup units work well with the 10' rise from the pit bottom to where the water evacuates the house.
I would recommend this unit.

This Company Stands By Their Product
This company stands by their product 100%. I installed the combo big dog last month after Irene. Last week the primary never kicked in and the "pump" alarm was going off. Plugged the primary directly into the outlet and could hear the unit making a low level hum sound. Plugged it in and out a few times and it started working.
Did the same thing a couple of days later. That time it kicked in after tapping the pump with the handle of a screwdriver. I would have let it go on the first time thinking it was a one-off weird issue. The second time made it clear there was a problem with the primary. Nothing got wet because the DC pump kept the pit dry. Called Glentronics and explained what happened and they FedExed a new combo unit second day. Swapped it out today, tested fine. Dropped off the original unit at a FedEx location nearby (no cost to me).
Good company, crap happens, the primary actually worked fine after that for a couple of days, go figure. The second unit was painted white as appose to the green primary I had originally. I wonder if it's exactly the same pump? Anyone know? Anyway, lets see how this one does.

So Easy To Install
Just bought the combo package after Hurricane Irene when we lost power for 3 1/2 days. Basement flooded so we decided to take every measure to prevent it from happening again. It took about 45 minutes to un-hook old pump and drop in the Watchdog. Very Easy!

Peace Of Mind
Everything was easy to install - tested perfect. Glad to have the peace of mind that our newly finished basement is protected at least at the sump pump. Now I just need to come up with something for a window well.

Great Pump
After having my basement flood, due to a faulty pump, I decided to never have the same problem again. following a storm, no local box stores had what I was looking for, so I went online and found Sump Pumps direct. Service had been wonderful before and after purchase. Great phone support.

Great Replacement!
Great replacement for my old sump pump system that failed during hurricane Irene. Great having a complete kit fully assembled and the battery acid. Installed in no time. The only disappointment I had is after looking at the pump and battery I found out they were both made in China. If I had to do it all over again I would have purchased a product made in the USA. My fault for not researching before I purchased.

I Have The Security Of a Backup Sump Pump Now
The install went very well. I had a professional plumber do it, (but it looked like I could have done it (even with my 4 thumbs per hand :-)
So far I can't even tell when it's running - it's so much quieter than my old model - I think I can attribute that to the built in check valves??
It's really nice knowing now that I have the security of a "basement watchdog" even though the backup hasn't "kicked on" yet - but then, that's good!
My only suggestion would be to have a better container for the battery acid - I found that filling the battery out of the box led to some leakage - (not sure, maybe operator error though) lol.
All in all, I recommend Sump Pumps Direct for their assistance in choosing a sump pump and for the extremely fast shipping.

SPD-BW4000KIT
Overall I would have to say I am very satisfied at the moment. The shipment was received without any problems via freight carrier. Because we have water coming in pretty much 24/7 and this was the first time we ever attempted to replace a pump, we had to have a utility pump handy just in case. I would have to say the hardest part of the installation was the cutting of the discharge line to the appropriate length because of a 45 degree joint that was located about 2 inches from where the new pump line would go. After that we just dropped it in, tighten the rubber coupling and ensured that the floats were not obstructed.
One thing did concern me though. When testing the backup pump the first time, the backup pump seemed to air lock. After about 30 seconds or so, it did start to pump out the water. We then allowed it to cycle several more times but it never air locked again… I am hoping that it was a first time running occurrence and everything is okay now. I had read that the smaller watchdog sump pump had this issue and that is why I went with the BIG dog.
Now only time will tell.

BW4000 Combo Pump
I just installed the bw4000 in my basement. I agree with Tom from Mn. The pump works fine but much too often because the pump float travels only a short distance before turning on. Can this float be adjusted in any way? Would it work any better if I raised the pump a bit in the sump by adding a brick or two?
Updated: I contacted Gelentronics via email to ask whether I could adjust the primary pump's float so that the pump didn't run so often. I received and immediate response. The answer is simply to raise the float a few inches to allow more water to flow into the sump pump. I was advised to raise both floats on the BW4000.

Hard Time Keeping Up
Sump pump runs to often, this is because the float only travels about 2.5 inches. The pump runs fine but
has a hard time keeping up because check valves allow some water back into the basin when pump shuts off.
The actual amount of water needed to enter 18 inch basket to start sump running again is only about 1.5 inches. Poor design in my opinion.

What A Great Pump!!!
Just got my sump pump delivered the other day and installed it in just a few minutes. Literally in a few minutes! All I had to do was measure up 18" from the bottom of my sump, put a mark on the existing PVC pipe and cut it off.
Everything else went together very smoothly. I think that the hardest part of the operation was putting the battery acid in the battery, which wasn't that hard at all. I am very pleased with it and now, I feel more secure about my basement.
I have had it flood twice before and thankfully, I didn't have anything down there that was worth much. Now I can use my basement without the worries. The pump itself is much quieter than the one I had before. My old pump sounded like a jet airplane taking off.
This pump was well worth the money and I didn't even have to call a plumber to put it in.

Never Too Late
My wife has been after me to put in a back up sump pump or a new unit for 2 months.
I finally ordered the combined WatchDog system today after my neighbor's and my brother-in-law's basement flooded from our recent storms this month.
I didn't know that there were "combined" pumps out there. Our local big box stores only offered the traditional sump pumps or a back up unit.
I'm ready to install the new one when it arrives. Stay tuned and hope it isn't too late for me.

Great sump pump!
This sump pump is awesome!
Less than a week after I installed it, we had a big rain storm & lost power for 10 hours. The backup battery sump pump worked like a charm!!
We had peace of mind and best of all, NO water in the basement! I highly recommend this pump for anyone with water problems.
It's worth the price just for the fact that you know you can depend on it to do its job!! I have been telling all my neighbors who had water in their basements to purchase this pump.
I know I'm glad I did!

How to Install A Combination Sump Pump System
If your primary sump pump is more than a few years old, you might as well upgrade it to a combination system.
Here's a great video from Basement Watchdog on how to install a combination sump pump.
