Q: I currently have a 1 hp sump with an electronic switch built in. I assume I can not use this item with my current pump, but would have to buy a 1/2 hp regular sump pump. Would I be able to install this switch myself, and how would I go about that. On bad days my pump runs every 10 seconds due to high water springs and deeper than normal basement.
by Norman Toncre from Ohio on July 02, 2016

A: Norman,

The level guard float switch works with pumps up to 1/2HP. This switch is installed on your discharge pipe with zip ties. The install on this is not that hard. The switch can be mounted at whatever height you need it to be for your desired activation level.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Q: Thanks for replying - the total basin is 23' wide x 29' high but the inflow line is at 16" high so the water would not get higher than 18-19".

Thanks

by Marc Shaw from Oregon on June 30, 2016

A: Marc,

With that size basin, you should absolutely be able to use two different pumps with the level guard switches.

Please let us know if we can help with anything else.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can I use two of these in the same sump pit (ie. one for a main pump and one for a backup) or will they interfere with each other?

Thanks

by Marc from Oregon on June 30, 2016

A: Marc,

What is the size of your basin?

Q: If I have a Zoeller M53 with a vertical float. I have read that the switch is the weak point of this pump so if I wanted to add a level guard to this pump would it work? Additionally would it add a redundancy to the existing float switch or would it complexly replace the float switch?
by Adam from Michigan on February 01, 2015

A: There is no possible way to add an additional switch to your current sump or sewage pump. It would simply not work. Your only option would be to replace the current switch. In the case of the Zoeller model M53 or with any other automatic pump with an integrated float switch, you would need to rig your current pump switch in the "ON" position and insure that it NEVER slips out of that position. Once that is done, you can add the LevelGuard and connect it to your pump via the piggyback connection on the LevelGuard power cord plug.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: When I installed my LevelGuard, it did not empty all the water from the sump pit right away. The pump ran several times until finally the water level went below the lower switch point line. Is something wrong?
by Francis J from Illinois on July 31, 2014

A: No. When the LevelGuard is first plugged in, it initiates a 'sump calibration routine'. This runs as follows assuming the sump pit is full of water:

Runs pump for 15 seconds, then stops.
Runs pump for 16 seconds, then stops.
Runs pump for 17 seconds, then stops.
This continues, increasing the pumping time in 1 second increments up to 99 seconds or until the bottom sensor is reached.
The purpose of this routine is to protect the equipment from running continuously in the event of a failure of the LevelGuard to detect a change of state by the lower sensor. This might occur if buildup of foreign material on the LevelGuard occurs or an object such as a sock falls into the pit and clings/covers LevelGuard's sensor area.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: The side of my sump pit gets covered with a scum build up that can get up to two inches thick. Will this cause a problem with this field sensing technology?
by Kurtis Y from Iowa on July 15, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. I brought your concerns up with the folks at LevelGuard and received the following response.

Yes, build up like that can definitely prevent activation of the LevelGuard sensors. This could particularly be of concern if the sump was filling and the LG fails to sense the rise in water level. Heavy build up of material on the LG surface can also cause false activation of the sensors but this is less of a problem due to the pump run-on prevention feature built into the software.
Regarding their "Peanut Butter Test" Video that we show on our site:
While this seems like a straight forward question the answer is highly dependent upon what the build-up material consists of. For a non-porous, non conductive material such as peanut butter the thickness would be 4 to 5 mm. For a material that soaks up water as it sits it would be considerably lower.

In addition, all manufacturers do recommend that you inspect your pumps, switches, batteries (if applicaple) and basins every 3-6 months to insure that the pumps and switches are operating correctly and there is no debris that might impede their operation. In addition, batteries should be checked for acid levels and terminals should be clean.
If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Q: How does the level guard switch work
by Gary R from Ohio on May 03, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. The LevelGuard switch works based on Field Effect sensing technology that was developed by TouchSensors, Inc out of Wheaton, IL.
Field-Effect sensors are digital, solid-state electronic devices that can detect conductive materials such as water or the human touch. The sensor’s cell design uses an integrated circuit (IC) that switches its output state when the conductive target is sensed. A Field-Effect cell is comprised of three main elements, the IC, a unique sensing electrode geometry, and two tuning resistors. Moreover, Field-Effect requires no moving parts, floats, software, or any other mechanism to operate.
When 5 VDC is supplied to the sensor, a low power, invisible field is created. The field emanates directly through any protective dielectric barrier such as plastic or glass that may surround or cover the sensor. When a conductive object or material enters the field, the sensor detects the change and indicates an event has occurred with a corresponding output signal. The input stimulus to the field is typically water in most liquid level sensing applications, as is the case in TouchSensor’s™ LevelGuard Home Sump Pump Control product line.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can the Level Guard be used with any system?
by Jason from Minnesota on February 12, 2014

A: The LevelGuard Z24800A1Z - Electronic Sump Pump Switch, is designed for sump pump only, rated up to 1/2 HP (12A Continuous - 30A Fused or Surge).

No Moving Parts
I chose this because of the warranty and the fact there are no moving parts. Teamed with a manual pump it allows you to have more adjustment than a n automatic pump and replacement is easy. I bought this for a friend who is very picky and will let you know if she is not happy.

Level Guard
I just installed the Level Guard on my sump pump a few days ago - and so far I am 100% satisfied. It was very easy to install and appears to working just as designed. I may need to get another one for my other pump if it continues to operate properly.

Great Switch
LevelGuard Z24800A1Z - Electronic Sump Pump Switch is my 3rd one paired with Zoeller 1/3 or 1/2 HP sump pumps. These are the best and most economical replacements for the mechanical float switches on Zoeller, or any sump pump, that wear out after several thousand cycles.

Fantastic Product
I have a Little Giant submersible sump pump, periodically the internal micro switch (operated by a diaphragm) would fail. After rebuilding the pump several times (and being familiar with it's construction) I elected to disconnect the switch and short the terminals together. I carefully reassembled the switch/ diaphragm housing and verified it being watertight and placed the pump into the sump pit. I plugged the modified pump into the "LevelGuard" and have been enjoying it's flawless... more

So Far So Good
I wanted to avoid a mechanical float so wen with this and the Zoeller N98 (No float) and it's been a great combo. I did notice that the N98 and this bought separately at this site is cheaper than the package deal. Not much, but just saying.

Replacing Good Pumps Due To A Defective Switch
I finally was fed up with replacing a perfectly good pump because the switch had gone bad. I removed the existing pump switch and hard wired the pump to be always on to use the LevelGuard switch to control the pump. The installation of the LevelGuard was straightforward and worked as promised the first time. The LevelGuard is pricey but it is a one time purchase.

Can't Wait To Try It Out!
I have gotten so tired of mechanical switches failing on sump pumps that this device caught my eye since it does not use a mechanical switch. I am installing currently and have high hopes that it will be a long term solution. Called there product support with a question and got a a quick reply. If you want a shorter time frame between switch on and off you need to install at an angle to the floor of your sump.
