  3 Questions
Q: When I installed my LevelGuard, it did not empty all the water from the sump pit right away. The pump ran several times until finally the water level went below the lower switch point line. Is something wrong?
by Francis J from Illinois on July 31, 2014

A: No. When the LevelGuard is first plugged in, it initiates a 'sump calibration routine'. This runs as follows assuming the sump pit is full of water:

Runs pump for 15 seconds, then stops.
Runs pump for 16 seconds, then stops.
Runs pump for 17 seconds, then stops.
This continues, increasing the pumping time in 1 second increments up to 99 seconds or until the bottom sensor is reached.
The purpose of this routine is to protect the equipment from running continuously in the event of a failure of the LevelGuard to detect a change of state by the lower sensor. This might occur if buildup of foreign material on the LevelGuard occurs or an object such as a sock falls into the pit and clings/covers LevelGuard's sensor area.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: The side of my sump pit gets covered with a scum build up that can get up to two inches thick. Will this cause a problem with this field sensing technology?
by Kurtis Y from Iowa on July 15, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. I brought your concerns up with the folks at LevelGuard and received the following response.

Yes, build up like that can definitely prevent activation of the LevelGuard sensors. This could particularly be of concern if the sump was filling and the LG fails to sense the rise in water level. Heavy build up of material on the LG surface can also cause false activation of the sensors but this is less of a problem due to the pump run-on prevention feature built into the software.
Regarding their "Peanut Butter Test" Video that we show on our site:
While this seems like a straight forward question the answer is highly dependent upon what the build-up material consists of. For a non-porous, non conductive material such as peanut butter the thickness would be 4 to 5 mm. For a material that soaks up water as it sits it would be considerably lower.

In addition, all manufacturers do recommend that you inspect your pumps, switches, batteries (if applicaple) and basins every 3-6 months to insure that the pumps and switches are operating correctly and there is no debris that might impede their operation. In addition, batteries should be checked for acid levels and terminals should be clean.
If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Q: How does the level guard switch work
by Gary R from Ohio on May 03, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. The LevelGuard switch works based on Field Effect sensing technology that was developed by TouchSensors, Inc out of Wheaton, IL.
Field-Effect sensors are digital, solid-state electronic devices that can detect conductive materials such as water or the human touch. The sensor’s cell design uses an integrated circuit (IC) that switches its output state when the conductive target is sensed. A Field-Effect cell is comprised of three main elements, the IC, a unique sensing electrode geometry, and two tuning resistors. Moreover, Field-Effect requires no moving parts, floats, software, or any other mechanism to operate.
When 5 VDC is supplied to the sensor, a low power, invisible field is created. The field emanates directly through any protective dielectric barrier such as plastic or glass that may surround or cover the sensor. When a conductive object or material enters the field, the sensor detects the change and indicates an event has occurred with a corresponding output signal. The input stimulus to the field is typically water in most liquid level sensing applications, as is the case in TouchSensor’s™ LevelGuard Home Sump Pump Control product line.

Intelligent Switch
I bought this to replace the everlasting problem floaty ball type switch. Those float balls can be touchy as to when they activate. After flooding in my basement due to the ball not activating I purchased this level guard switch.

I love that there are no outward mechanical parts to rely on. Mounted it quickly. It operated as described in the directions. It measures and calibrated itself over a few cycles. It will end up that it pretty much will turn on and off near the marks labeled on... more

Works As Advertised
Easy to install, beats the heck out of float switches which seemed to get hung up way too often. Only 2 cable ties included, 2 more light ones would have been nice to support the cords. otherwise I am impressed.

Installed without a hitch. No messing with float elevations or tangled wires. Love it! Reminder to keep the front of float away from the pump to remove interference with electronics.

Hvac Guy Impressed!
I had numerous problems with my mechanical float on my sewage ejector, which was less than a year old. I found these through a contractor magazine and installed on my sewage pump for my basement, now works every time and love that there's no moving parts!

Levelguard Switch
I purchased this product as a last resort to fix my inconsistent performance of my sewage pump float switch, the pump originally came with. Let me tell you it was extremely easy to install and it worked perfectly from day one. The system works better now than when it was originally installed. I'm so happy with the level guard it has lifted a hugh stress off my shoulders. I would recommend anyone installing a new system or upgradeing an existing system to add the level guard switch, day one!!
Pros: Easy To Use, Exceeded Expectations, Reliable, High Quality

Nick,
Thank you for posting your LevelGuard sump pump switch experience on Sump Pumps Direct. We're glad the LevelGuard is able to remove stress from your life. Years from now you'll notice (... like we have in our own test lab) that the switch point is so consistent, a water line will form at the precise level your sump pump turns on each cycle.

Easy And Reliable
I was skeptical of this item even after watching the video. But I ordered it any way, and let me tell you this thing is outstanding!!! It was easy to install and works AWSOME!!! I replaced the old dangling ball style because it kept hanging up as well as it started becoming unreliable. This unit requires very little room and functions like a dream. Let's face it when you are dealing with a waste tank there is no room for failure!! With this replacement I am assured there will be no failure.

Stephen,
There is never joy in servicing or replacing a defective switch in a sewage pit. Your LevelGuard should operate reliably for many years and reduce the frequency of having to access the pit. We're glad it meets you needs and thank you for your recommendation.

Levelguard Electronic Pump Switch
Due to the configuration of my connection, I had to cut the plug off. There was a black, white and what I thought was a dark green wire so I hooked these wires up accordingly.

I looked at the schematic and it referenced a red, black and white. Thought these colors were for a pigtail connection. There is no ground wire, the color is blue (switch wire) blew up the first switch contacted LevelGuard they generously sold me a new switch which I wired correctly. Switch has been working like champ... more

Andrew,
It was a pleasure talking to you on the phone. We are glad the LevelGuard team was able to work with you to remedy the custom modification you made to your LevelGuard unit. As we discussed, the piggy-back plug and power cord was not intended for user modification in the field. As such, the LevelGuard's internal wire color coding scheme is slightly different than typical industry color codes. It was good to see that a simple color clarification was all you needed to properly install your replacement unit. Please touch base with us in a couple of years to report on how your LevelGuard has been performing.

Great Pump Switch
I owned a Dayton 1/3 sump pump for approximately 3-1/2 years and the float switch stop working. This is a Grainger product and to replace with an original cost $175.00 from the manufacture with a 1-year warranty. I was not pleased with the cost and most importantly the limited warranty. I search the internet and came across the LevelGuard Z24803PTZ - Electronic Sewage & Effluent Pump Switch. I watched the video and was pleased how easy to install, and this has a 5-year warranty. “A no... more
