I called Wayne and learned that the problem I was having is because my water softener discharged into the sump pit (which the pump is not designed to handle).
The brine was leaving a film on the switch.
I have since rerouted my softener and now the pump is working as it should.

Either my pump is defective, or they have not perfected the Switch Genius feature.
Every time it runs, it keeps going for about 5 extra seconds sucking air- it's very noisy. Sometimes it runs and runs and runs even though there is no water in the pit.
The manual says it is important to keep the switch sensor clean. I do, but it can be squeaky clean and still it doesn't work right.
