Product QuestionsAnswered by Jim, the Sump Pump Expert
What does min. sump basin size mean?
John D
from Massachusetts
February 02, 2013
Answer
The minimum sump basin size relates to the minimum size of your sump basin or pit, that a specific pump will safely operate in. Any pump needs a certain amount of space due to "on/off" levels, cooling factors and cycling that the pump is designed for. Most pumps will require a standard size basin of 18" wide by 24" deep but some will also operate in smaller basins. You want to pay very close attention to these requirements as they will insure a longer pump life.

I would like to know how many watts a 1/3 or 1/2 hp sump pump has, because i was think of buying a portable generator in case the power goes off.

Answer
That really depends on the pump. Some are more efficient than others. For example, the 1/3HP Basement Watchdog model BW1033 has a running amp rating of 3.5 and a starting amp rating of 7. When you figure the watts by the formula of amps times volts equals watts ( A X V = W), you get 420 running watts and 840 starting watts. But when you look at the Zoeller 1/3HP model M53, that pump has a running amp rating of 9.6 and a starting amp rating of 29.6 or 1152 running watts and 3552 starting watts.

Looking for a pump that will run continuously for a water fall. Pumping about 7 vertical feet and 20 horizontal feet. Waterfall is about 15 feet long and one and a half to two feet wide.

Answer
The Pro Series pumps are rated for continuous duty and may be used in applications requiring continuous pumping including fountains, ponds, etc. For use in any continuous duty application the pump should be plugged directly into the wall outlet without the use of the controller. The outlet must be a single phase properly grounded 3-prong receptacle, 115V, 60HZ (preferably with ground fault
circuit interrupt). For continuous duty operation, the pump must be submerged at least 3/4 of the depth of the pump at all times.
Other pumps that you could consider for this application would be the BASEMENT WATCHDOG and STORMPRO pumps.

I need a small sump pump that will withstand pumping 15% sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
Tim Fitzgerald
from North Carolina

Answer
While this pump will work, it is not designed to pump anything other that rain water. Pumping any kind of chemicals or bleach, even diluted, will reduce the life of the pump, not to mention, also voiding the warranty. You might look at the PHCC Pro Series Model DCM-050 chemical pump.
