Pump starts up and pumps OK, --BUT-- when the water level drops down to about 1ft. which requires about a 2ft. discharge head the pump stops pumping. also, when I found this happening, after a few hours, the water in the sump was hot!

You're most likely causing to much back-pressure. Make sure you are using a 1-1/4" discharge and check valve.
