Hi Gene. Check valves should typically be replaced anytime you replace your sump pump or every 5-7 years.

I currently have a zoeller sump pump in a concrete pit it pumps expelled tower water to a drain up 40 ft and horizontally approx. 100ft were it drops down 40 ft to a sewer drain. There currently is no check valve. so when the pump shuts off all the water in the vertical pipe runs back in the pit. This is causing 2 problems. pump cycling and water hammer. Does this check valve have to be installed in a vertical pipe.

Not at all. The Zoeller 30-0152 - 2" Cast Iron Full-Flow Check Valve can be installed vertically or horizontally.
