Q: My water softener wash tube discharges into my sump pit. Will the Storm Pro BA Series Pump hold up to the salt water in the pit?
by Jim T from Ohio on January 29, 2014

A: The StormPro pumps are actually one of the few pumps that we offer that are designed for saltwater, so you should be fine!
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: i just purchased this pump and do i need to drill a relief hole in the discharge pipe?
by Dan N from Illinois on June 11, 2013

A: You should always drill a "weep" hole in your discharge pipe to help prevent air lock in your discharge pipe between the discharge port of the pump and the check valve. I recommend drilling a 1/8" or 3/16" diameter hole about 4" up from the base of the discharge port of your pump into your PVC discharge pipe. Drill the hole at a 45 degree angle with the hole pointing toward the bottom of your sump basin.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is this pump capable of handling water softener and washing machine discharge?

if not, which brand/model can?

by Steve K from Wisconsin on June 06, 2013

A: Generally, sump pumps are not recommended for use in a water softener and/or laundry application. Just about all manufacturers will void the warranty if the pump is installed and fails in this application. You might check out our selection of LAUNDRY / DRAIN PUMP SYSTEMS as most of these self contained systems are designed for laundry and water softener applications.

Q: Hi Jim

I have a handful of questions about your StormPro BA-50M.

1. How adjustable is the float switch? I get that I can mount it on the discharge hose and make the pump turn on at any height I choose. But can I, for example, set the pump to turm on at 25" and turn off at 3"? Or do I have a limited range of play between the on/off settings?

2. Is the manual override switch physically located on the pump casing or is there an option for remote control via a cord?

3. Is the outlet port 2" FNPT?

4. Is the float switch mercury free?

5. Is there any way I can get my hands on the user manual prio to purchasing this pump? (PDF download or similar?)

6. And... do you sell to Fed. Gov Agencies? If yes, do you have a special department or person that I need to contact?

Thanks! Have a great day!

by Mon Kwong from Virginia on March 07, 2013

A: The vertical float switch for the StormPro pumps have a 6-1/2" differential, so they will only pump out between 6-1/2" - 7" of water no matter what height you clamp it down at. For more control on your pump run time, you might consider the Pro Series - Standard Controller System w/ Dual Vertical Float Switch, model DFC1 which will activate the pump for 10 seconds once the float drops to it's original position or the Pro Series - Deluxe Controller System w/ Dual Vertical Float Switch, model DFC2, which gives you the option of setting your pump run time from 5-45 seconds once the float drops to it's original position.

The StormPro pump does not provide for a manual override switch. If you wish to use the pump manually, you simply remove the vertical float switch and plug the pump into your AC outlet direct.

The discharge port on the BA-50M is a 2" female NPT.

The float switch is, as all are required to be, mercury free.

You can access the operation manual

We do sell to government agencies however, we do not accept PO's for payment.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Q: Hi Jim! I own a couple 1/2's and a 1/3 hp storm pros. I just saw that they are not "Oil Free" pumps, does that mean they need any oil maintenance, why would they mention it otherwise? Didn't see any oil notes elsewhere. Thank you!
by Vince P from New Jersey on December 28, 2012

A: The StormPro pumps are oil filled to help keep the pump cool and generally do not require any oil maintenance. This is usually mentioned on all our pumps since some are oil filled and some are not. The non-oil filled pumps are considered water-cooled and are safe for applications that might require a continuous duty waterfall in a fish pond or some other environment that would include aquatic life.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can the StormPro 1/2 HP Cast Iron Stainless Steel Sump Pump be used with back-up battery or it must be plug in to an electrical outlet.
by JAMES P from New York on September 24, 2012

A: The StormPro model BA-50M, 1/2HP sump pump is designed to be operated on 120 volts AC. There currently is no battery capable of powering a 120 volt primary sump pump. The only possible options would be an AUXILARY POWER SYSTEM which will operate up to a 1/2HP pump for up to 10-12 hours continuous or 24-36 hours non-continuous, a complete BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM or looking into the possibility of installing a STANDBY GENERATOR.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I would like to know how many watts a 1/3 or 1/2 hp sump pump has, because i was think of buying a portable generator in case the power goes off.
by Tom B. from New York on September 03, 2012

A: That really depends on the pump. Some are more efficient than others. For example, the 1/3HP Basement Watchdog model BW1033 has a running amp rating of 3.5 and a starting amp rating of 7. When you figure the watts by the formula of amps times volts equals watts ( A X V = W), you get 420 running watts and 840 starting watts. But when you look at the Zoeller 1/3HP model M53, that pump has a running amp rating of 9.6 and a starting amp rating of 29.6 or 1152 running watts and 3552 starting watts.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I understand that the BA-33M has a switch differential of 6-1/2 inches. Can I modify it with a longer rod to increase that differential and thus further cycling?
by Ben from Ohio on June 27, 2012

A: Unfortunately, there is no way to modify that switch. If you are looking for a way to increase the run time of the pump, you might consider changing to a TETHER float or the Pro Series Ultimate Sensor Pump Controller System model USC3.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I would like to buy the storm pro 1/3 hp pump but would like level switch to control over a longer span (deep pit with higher flow rates at times) want to minimize cycles. Is there a different longer switch rod that can replace the stock version.
by Barry from Minnesota on May 08, 2012

A: Unfortunately not! Your only options would be the Pro Series Ultimate Sensor Pump Controller System, model USC3 or the Superior Pump Wide Angle Tether Float Switch w/ Piggyback Plug, model 92005. The Pro Series switch can be adjusted to pump for 5 - 45 seconds once the water level drops below the sensor and the Superior tether float has an adjustable pumping range of 7” to 36”.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim, looking to understand the power consumption of the StormPro 1/2HP Model BA-50M pump. If its 1/2 HP at 120V, that converts to 375watts or 3.1 Amps by standard conversion. The pump is rated at 5.1 amps constant which converts to 615 watts at 120V or over 3/4HP. I'm trying to understand the difference and which one is accurate representation of power consumption.
by Dar from Michigan on March 31, 2012

A: If you are trying to figure out the wattage that the pump actually consumes, you need to use the following formula: amps X volts = watts

Due to the difference in the motors and windings, etc. that are used in all pumps, their power efficiencies can vary widely. The StormPro pumps are some of the more efficient and powerful brands currently available.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the Storm Pro Ba33m 1/3 HP UL inspected?
by Gregory Speicher from Pennsylvania on January 28, 2012

A: No they are not, but they do carry the CSA certification.

CSA International (Canadian Standards Association), a member of the CSA Group, is a provider of product testing and certification services for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas and a variety of other products. Recognized in the U.S., Canada and around the world, CSA’s marks appear on billions of products worldwide.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What is the height and width of this unit?
by Walter from California on October 08, 2011

A: The dimensions are 9.1L x 6.3W x 13.8H.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I need to upgrade my pumping capacity - current sump pump (approx. 2400 GPH @ 10ft) was overwhelmed last season. I am looking at the StormPro 1/2 HP or 3/4 HP pumps. I currently have 1 1/2" piping and wondered if you could tell me what the actual GPH on both of these StormPro pumps would be if I use a 2" to 1 1/2" adaptor at the base of discharge and is this adaptor provided with these pumps? Thanks!
by Rob from Wisconsin on April 14, 2011

A: The StormPro BA-33M 1/3HP pump will do 3000 GPH @ 10 feet and the model BA-50M 1/2HP pump will do 4200 GPH @ 10 feet. I wouldn't think you should need to increase your pumping capacity any more than that. Typically, if your current pump is not keeping up with the incoming water, you should only increase the HP by one size. As for the pumping capacity when reducing the 1/2HP BA-50M down to 1 1/2" discharge, you might try calling StormPro at (800) 323-1665 x231. Another option would be to add a BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM. Most systems will activate should the water level in you pit rise to the level of the backup systems float switch to assist your primary pump and add extra pumping capacity if needed.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I have the StormPro 1/3hp pump and want to upgrade to the 1/2hp. My discharge pipes are 1.5 inches now. Will I have to change the discharge pipe to 2 inch or is there a way to make this work without changing all my piping?
by Bob from Massachusetts on April 06, 2011

A: You can use a 2" to 1 1/2" adapter at the base of the discharge. It will reduce your GPH, but not drastically. Also, keep in mind that there is usually no reason to upgrade just for the sake of it unless your present pump is having difficulty keeping up with the incoming water. Bigger is not always better.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What does "manual override" on the float switch mean? I have a 110 volt receptacle that is controlled by a float. Will this pump work with that receptacle?
by Bob from Michigan on February 12, 2011

A: Manual override means that the pump can be used without the float switch. It's basically a utility type pump that has independent float switch. They are two separate pieces. The pump should be able to work with that receptacle.

The switch that is included is has a piggyback style plug, like Christmas lights.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: How does the sump pump connect to the independent float switch, Does the pump plug into the switch and the switch plugs into the power?
by Mark from New Jersey on February 09, 2011

A: Yes, most external float switches utilize this design. It's consider a "Piggyback" style plug. Very similar to how sets of Christmas lights connect to each other.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hi Jim. I know the float can be attached to discharge line. I'm wondering what the maximum On/Off points are. Looking to figure out how many inches of water will be pumped out per cycle. Thanks.
by Charlie from New York on January 05, 2011

A: The on/off differential for the float switch is about 6.5".

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty pump, choose a iON. These pumps were originally sold only by plumbers, contractors and plumbing distributors. Now you have the opportunity to buy what the professionals do.

These pumps are built to last, bottom line. With a volute and motor housing made of cast iron and stainless steel, they will provide years of reliable operation. They also use a cast iron impeller which extends the life of the pump even longer.

Good Product
I bought a storm pro pump 4 years ago and it's been very reliable. So much so that I recently have had a need for a second pump and that's why I bought a second one. I trust it and it's quality, now I have the second one hooked up and they both haven't let me down. These pumps are my flood insurance for my home, they need to be good.

"I like Sump Pumps Direct, a good place to shop at, not only because they have a good selection but also do to the fact they have people who are knowledgeable on there products and can inform you on anything you have a question with. That's why I'm a return customer and have purchased products from them numerous times. The only thing all say that might be negative is though the sump pumps ship free, the accessories you get do not. I would like it if the extras you buy were shipped free too."

Three Years And Still Going Strong
I bought one for my new home three years ago. We have a very wet spring and fall, and the basement used to flood before I moved in. This pump has been rock solid so far, easily handles the worst flooding conditions we experience. I would recommend and will buy one again when the need arises.
Pros: High Quality, I'd Buy It Again, Fast, Reliable

So Far So Good
Used to get Zoeller pumps, but the last one failed in 30 days. I was extremely pissed off. We have a finished basement and we are on a high water table and had a battery back up taking boot. I am done with Zoeller. Hopefully your pump is better. Like the adjustable float. Gives me the opportunity to lower it when we have a dry spell. Not this year in St Charles, IL.

This Company Iis Awesome
This review is about the Company and the technician who I spoke with on the phone. I called on Friday, before Memorial Day and spoke to Jared. He informed when I ordered the sump pump that being a holiday weekend, I probably wouldn't receive the pump until Tuesday, possibly Wednesday. Which I was okay with since my old one was still working. It wasn't 24 hours later, Fed Ex was knocking on my front door with the pump. I don't know how they got it here so quick but, I can't say enough good... more

Good Product/bad Advice
The sump pump is exceptionally quiet and efficient. The cover could have had more holes or at least punch outs for the auxiliary pump. The basin came without holes pre-drilled and had no instructions as to the placement. I wrote an e-mail to the so-called experts at Sump Pumps Direct inquiring where to place the holes. I received back the advice to check online, that there were many places that gave this advice. After some searching I found one place with advice on placement, but was very... more

While we would like to give as much advice as possible about installing sump/sewage basins, it is very difficult because of the complexity of the install. Installing these basins (which normally include a french drain or drain tile system for maximum water removal) is on the far end of a "DIY" project. Installing a basin incorrectly can cause serious foundation or structural damage to your home. If you're unfamiliar with the installation process, it's always best to contact a licensed plumber.

So Far, Very Happy
I bought this pump as a replacement pump a couple months ago. It is in an outside, underground pit, and pumps water via 2" PVC pipe over an embankment about 5 feet vertical and 60 feet horizontal. What sold me, apart from some good reviews, was the built in screen that can keep debris out of the pipes. It has proved perfectly reliable. Powerful enough to keep up with the amount of groundwater flowing in.

If I had to pick a CON, I would like greater travel in the float switch, as it... more

It Is A Workhorse
Hurricane Sandy was the first real test of my StormPro BA-50M. . . a great pump.

My basement has flooded twice in the past two years since we bought the house. In both cases, we had 6+ inches of rain. The house had a history of flooding which resulted in several mods by the previous owner; including the installation of a second sump.

After our second flood (just a wet basement) I took a hard look at my pumps and other modifications. Both existing pumps were on the small side. I... more

Outstanding Pump. Very easy to install, so quiet you hardly hear it working and expels a full sump pit of water in a blink of an eye. I installed 6 of these and each and everyone runs like a dream.

Float Hang Up
I bought the pump because the ground water is brackish. Runs very quiet and smooth. But came home last week found basement flooded because the float hung up. Sloshed through the basement jiggled the pipe a bit and it immediately kicked on. Can't trust it any more.
Pros: Quiet
Cons: Low Quality, Float Hangs Up
